Free Alternative to Microsoft OneNote

Friday, November 12th, 2010

I am not sure if I have mentioned it but I love Microsoft OneNote. It is a great freeform database program that allows you to store many different types of information in one place. Microsoft is almost perfect in my opinion. Almost you say? OK, what is not perfect about Microsoft OneNote? The price!

Although Microsoft OneNote is a great program, it does cost money, and money is something that many people are running short of during this worldwide economic recession we are all muddling through. Wouldn’t it be great if you could have an alternative to MS OneNote that you could use for free?

RedNotebook is a Freeware Alternative to Microsoft OneNote

Until now, alternatives to Microsoft’s OneNote program have been unflattering at best and epic failures at worst. RedNotebook has changed all of that with one of the simplest and easiest software programs to use. I do want my readers to know that this is an unsolicited review and I am writing this because I believe in the freeware software movement, not because someone paid me to.

RedNotebook Review

RedNotebook describes itself as a journaling tool but in reality, it is much more. Using this program felt like using a free form wiki database that I did not have to worry about reading arcane instruction sets to enter and retrieve data.

RedNotebook has an astonishing feature set including tagging, spell checking, formatting options; image, file, link insertion; search, auto-save, backup, word clouds, templates, exporting to major formats such as PDF, HTML, Latex.

Your data is stored in plain text files and can be read with many other text-reading programs and RedNotebook has been translated into over 20 languages so the international community can use it.

RedNotebook is available for most major operating systems including Windows, Linux, BSD, and Apple.

RedNotebook is a Wiki on Steroids

I have been using wiki style software for many years now and the problems with getting a stable solution working on a personal computer are daunting to say the least. RedNotebook fixes all those programs and hands you the ability to work with wiki style features in a freeform database program that you can install on your pc that does not need an html server to function properly.

RedNotebook vs. OneNote – Which is Better?

Obviously, Microsoft OneNote is better than RedNotebook because a multinational corporation with a large research budget and several hundred employees created it. However, RedNotebook has the advantage of being free and it fulfills many of the features available in OneNote. You cannot beat the price and the software would work great for keeping track of your paid survey activities.
